Learn To Sew Series

In the Learn To Sew Series, students will attend class once a week for one hour sessions. Students will complete a total of six classes focused on sewing basics. Upon completion students are ready to enter one of weekly classes such as Fashion Kids + Teens, Sewing Is Art, or Quilting Fun.

What is covered in the Learn To Sew Series at Thimble Bee’s?

Week 1: Learn about sewing safety and how to keep yourself safe while using a sewing machine. Learn how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin. We also cover how to change a needle and what thread to use.

Week 2: Fabric prep talk. We discuss what fabrics you should be working with as a beginner, how to lay out patterns onto your fabric, and proper cutting techniques. We also discuss how to mark your fabric for best results.

Week 3: Jumping back to the sewing machine! We will be looking at a standard stitch and zigzag stitch, achieving a correct seam allowance, increasing the stitch length and reviewing how to thread our sewing machines successfully.

Week 4: We will focus on sewing accuracy – how to sew curves and corners, matching seams, and how to press our seams correctly. Introduction to reading a simple pattern and basic sewing terms.

Week 5: Put your knowledge to action. Cutout and begin sewing a simple bag.

Week 6: Continue practicing sewing basics by completing your first simple sewing project. Students will be awarded a Learn To Sew completion certificate.
